Total Cholesterol and Acid Phosphatase Levels in Cerebrospinal Fluid of Pediatric Patients

Abstract
Total choesterol and acid phosphatase levels in cerebrospinal fluid wre determined in normals(12 cases), tuberculous meningitis(18 cases), encephalitis Japonica(21 cases), and poliomyelitis(11 cases), which, in common, have a damage of nervous tissue, rich in choesterol, as a characteristic.
1. Both choesterol and acid phosphatase were not detectable in C.S.F. of normal children.
2. Tuberculous meningitis of transitional stage and encephalitis of early stage showed slightly increased levels of both entities. A greatly increased choesterol with slight increase of acid phosphatease level was demonstrated in encephalitis in its climax, tuberculous meningitis of terminal stage, and poliomyelitis. With the recovery of the above deseases, however, a decline in both choesterol and acid phosphatease level was noted.
3. From the above finding, the possible mechanisms for the evevation of choesterol and acid phosphatases levels in C.S.F. have been also discussed.
